It's simple, really: power. Adding a turbo to a car's engine is a highly effective way of massively increasing its power. In simple terms, a turbo forces more air into the engine's cylinders which, added to some extra fuel, means a bigger bang can be created in the cylinder. A bigger bang means more power.
What does a turbo actually do?
It is the job of the turbocharger to compress more air flowing into the engine's cylinder. When air is compressed the oxygen molecules are packed closer together. This increase in air means that more fuel can be added for the same size naturally aspirated engine.
Is turbo good or bad?
They are good at making reliable power
Even in low pressure, or 'safe' applications, turbocharging can boost the output of an engine by over 25%, and, depending on how much power you want to make, turbocharged engines can be just as reliable as their naturally aspirated counterparts.
