Bread and other food in the stomach slows down the rate at which alcohol is absorbed, but does not prevent intoxication, or drunkenness. It also takes time for alcohol to leave the body. That's why drinking coffee or having a cold shower does little to help you 'sober up'.
What foods get rid of drunkenness?
Put some ice or a cold cloth on your head. Keep the shades closed and light out of your eyes, or wear sunglasses. Eat bland foods like toast and crackers to raise your blood sugar without irritating your stomach. Don't drink more alcohol, as it will make you feel worse.
Does bread help alcohol?
Although it sounds logical, bread does not “soak up” the alcohol in your system and therefore prevent a hangover. Nor does the carbon from burnt toast. In fact eating before bed does nothing to prevent a hangover the next day.
