Does Breaking Altars Spread Corruption?

The altars do not spread corruption, unless you break them. When you break them they cause a small amount of corruption(or hallow) to appear randomly on the map somewhere.

What happens when you break too many demon altars?

Honestly, there's nothing really to worry about. You'll get a tiny patch of Crimruption or Hallow somewhere in the world, but it won't spread too much by the time a playthrough is done, especially if you kill the Mechanical Bosses fairly quickly.

What blocks can corruption not spread through?

  • Corruption, Crimson and Hallow will spread to stone, sand, ice and dirt that are up to three tiles away.
  • Almost all other blocks are immune to Corruption and Hallow, including Wood, Clay Blocks, Ash Blocks, Silt Blocks, Obsidian, Ores, Gems, and all bricks (except Pearlstone, which will spread Hallow).
