Does Echolalia Go Away?

With autistic children, echolalia appears with more frequency and typically lasts for a longer period of time versus children with standard developing language. A child with typical developing language can imitate some utterances from a preferred movie or song yet he won't repeat the movie several times a day.

Can echolalia be cured?

A doctor can prescribe antidepressants or anxiety medications to combat the side effects of echolalia. This doesn't treat the condition itself, but it helps keep the person with echolalia calm.

How long does echolalia last?

And yes, echolalia is normal for children, as it's their way to learn to communicate. It usually begins around 18 months old and continues until your child learns how to imitate. By the time your child is age three, they will be able to repeat nearly any word and talk in three-word sentences.
