English. The diaeresis, the grave accent and the acute accent are the only diacritics used in Modern English (apart from diacritics used in orthographically unadapted loanwords). Their use, however, is considered to be largely archaic.
What English words have a diaeresis?
A diaeresis is also placed over a lone vowel to show that it's not silent, as in the name “Brontë.” But in most names (as well as words) with diaereses, the mark is suspended over the second of two vowels: “Chloë,” “Eloïse,” “Zoë,” “Noël.”
Is English a Diacritic?
In English, words having diacritics are borrowings from other languages, and the marks are not a natural part of the English language itself. However, lexicographers have adopted diacritics to indicate English pronunciation and, of course, to show word etymologies.
