H. alvei (formerly Enterobacter hafniae) is currently the sole species in the genus Hafnia. It resides in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and many animal species. These microorganisms are motile but do not ferment lactose.
What does Hafnia alvei cause?
Hafnia causes a variety of systemic infections, including septicemia and pneumonia; however, its role as a gastrointestinal pathogen is controversial. Many of the data supporting a role for hafniae as enteric pathogens were incorrectly attributed to this genus rather than to the actual pathogen, Escherichia albertii.
Is Hafnia alvei aerobic or anaerobic?
Hafnia alvei is a gram-negative facultatively anaerobic bacillus that belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae. This organism is a causative agent of intestinal disorders and is found in different environments.
