When East Turkistan was conquered in the 8th century by the Uyghur Turks, one of their leaders adopted Manichaeism, and it remained the state religion of the Uyghur kingdom until its overthrow in 840. Manichaeism itself probably survived in East Turkistan until the Mongol invasion in the 13th century.
