The 'fertile window' is the day an egg is released from the ovary (ovulation) and the five days beforehand. Having sex (intercourse) during this time gives you the best chance of getting pregnant.
Does ovulation mean you're fertile?
Aside from cycle length and predictability, being able to detect ovulation is a promising sign of fertility. (Plus, knowing the exact window of ovulation helps you time baby-making sex to boost pregnancy odds.) Most women ovulate 14 days before their next period. In a 28-day cycle, that means day 14.
What is the difference between ovulation and fertility?
If on average you have a period every 28 days you ovulate around day 14 and your best chance of conceiving is between days 11 and 14. But if you have a shorter interval between periods, say 24 days, ovulation happens around day 10 and your 'fertile window' is between days 7 and 10.
