Although propofol is a good sedative and amnestic drug, it does not have analgesic properties. Too often, in our opinion, patients receive propofol, at a time when an analgesic would serve them better.
Does propofol relieve pain?
During administration, propofol significantly decreased pain scores and areas of hyperalgesia and allodynia compared with both 10% Intralipid and saline (placebo-corrected mean Numerical Rating Scale score reduction by propofol: 38 +/- 28%).
Do etomidate and propofol have analgesic properties?
Postoperative nausea and vomiting are more common with etomidate than propofol or barbiturate induction but appear to have the same frequency as general anesthesia. Etomidate lacks analgesic properties.
