Does Screaming Relieve Stress

While it might feel great to you, keep in mind that your scream could have negative effects on the people who hear it. Laboratory research has shown that the rough sounds of human screams activate fear responses deep in the minds of people who listen to them.

Can screaming reduce stress?

Just like crying or laughing can provide a rush of calm in moments of sadness or joy, a good ol’ yell can give us temporary relief from anger and frustration. “I think every emotion that we feel has a kind of correlating action that goes along with it,” says Avi Klein, a Manhattan psychotherapist.

Why do people scream when stressed?

“In brain imaging parts of the experiment, screams activate the fear circuitry of the brain,” he says. “The amygdala is a nucleus in the brain especially sensitive to information about fear.” That means screams are inherently considered not just sound but a trigger for heightened awareness.
