Synkinesis will not go away completely. However, with continued therapy that may include facial retraining, chemodenervation, and other treatments such as mindfulness, the severity of synkinesis can be reduced.
Can you cure synkinesis?
Answer: If treated early enough, in some cases synkinesis can be resolved. In long-term cases, regular soft tissue release and stretches will temporarily make the face feel less tight however the tightness does return. The stretches do however form the foundation for facial movement retraining.
Is facial synkinesis permanent?
Long-term unresolved synkinesis may result in permanent contracture, such as hypertrophy of corrugator muscle, deep nasolabial fold, lower lip retraction, chin skin dimples, and neck bands.
