The contraceptive injection Depo-Provera can increase your risk of osteoporosis and broken bones. Several studies have shown that bone density does decrease by a small amount in women using Depo-Provera. Most of the decrease happens during the first few years on Depo-Provera, then the bone density stabilises.
Should I take calcium while on Depo?
People who use the shot may have a temporary loss of bone density but the bone loss is largely reversible once the method is stopped. Calcium (1200 mg/day) and vitamin D supplements are recommended while using the shot.
Why does Depo cause bone density loss?
Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate inhibits the secretion of pituitary gonadotropins, resulting in anovulation and decreased production of estrogen. Decreased estrogen production is of concern because it is associated with a decrease in bone mass or bone mineral density (BMD).
