Warner Bros. In a similar vein as Hagrid's Hut moving for The Prisoner Of Azkaban the Whomping Willow changes position too. It moves from the Training Grounds within the Hogwarts grounds in its first appearance to a large distance away from the castle on some craggy land in The Prisoner Of Azkaban.

The tree can be frozen by pushing a knot on its base. During the Marauders time at Hogwarts, a transformed Peter Pettigrew, whose Animagus form was a rat, would slip in and push the knot. Crookshanks also performed this duty during Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger's third year at Hogwarts.

There are two known ways to immobilize the particular Whomping Willow placed at Hogwarts: pressing a particular knot at the base of the tree or using the "Immobulus" spell.
