Does Toilet Paper Decompose?

Toilet paper can take 5 weeks or more to biodegrade, depending on whether it's been buried or not. Kleenex would theoretically take a little longer, if using ones that are thicker than toilet paper. Wet wipes take around 100 years to decompose.

Is toilet paper biodegradable?

Technically speaking, all toilet paper is biodegradable because it's made from natural materials — whether it's wood pulp from virgin forests or recycled paper.

How bad is toilet paper for the environment?

Toilet paper's impact is even more severe because, since it is so short-lived, it quickly releases its remaining carbon into the atmosphere. That is why, according to the Environmental Paper Network, toilet paper made from trees has three times the climate impact as toilet paper created using recycled materials.
