Early Life and education

Ernest was reared in Gary as an only child by his father, who was a high school teacher, and his mother, who was a homemaker. While in high school, he developed an interest in performing and was a member of the theatre club, but his parents encouraged him to focus on his education. Ernest was also a sports fan who enjoyed playing soccer and basketball. In 1967, he matriculated and later enrolled at Indiana State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology and psychology in 1971.

Ernest enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York after deciding to concentrate on his acting career and became an Alumnus in 1974.
