Early life

Fareed Zakaria was born on 20 January 1964 (age 57 years) in Bombay, Maharashtra, India. His parents were Rafiq Zakaria (father) and Fatima Zakaria (mother). Zakaria’s father was a politician affiliated with the Indian National Congress, and his mother was an editor at the Sunday Times of India.

Fareed and his siblings, Tasneem Zakaria Mehta and Arshad Zakaria, grew up in Bombay or present-day Mumbai, where he experienced his childhood and attended school. The star and his brother attended a British Anglican school called the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai.

It is from here that Fareed learnt of the differences that existed between the Islamic and Western worlds. In 1986, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University.
