Stretta is a safe modestly effective, totally endoscopic treatment for GERD. Symptomatic improvement when achieved is often associated with correlating improvement in distal acid exposure. This exposure normalizes in nearly half the treated patients.
How successful is the Stretta procedure?
The Stretta procedure was successful in all patients. No severe adverse events occurred during the procedure or the 6-month follow-up period. Mild adverse events occurred in 4 patients (12.5%, 4/32) after the procedure. Two patients (6.2%) complained of sore throat in the first 24 hours after the Stretta procedure.
How long has the Stretta procedure been around?
The device for carrying out the procedure was originally developed by a company called Curon which obtained FDA approval for the device in 2000 but then went bankrupt in 2006; the device was brought back to market by Mederi Therapeutics in 2010. The procedure costs between $3,000 and $4,000 as of 2004.
