Has Anyone Survived Sepsis?

By some estimates, severe sepsis or septic shock strikes nearly 1 million Americans each year. At least 200,000 of them die in the hospital shortly afterward. Many who survive recover completely.

What are the chances of surviving sepsis?

As sepsis worsens, blood flow to vital organs, such as your brain, heart and kidneys, becomes impaired. Sepsis may cause abnormal blood clotting that results in small clots or burst blood vessels that damage or destroy tissues. Most people recover from mild sepsis, but the mortality rate for septic shock is about 40%.

Is sepsis a death sentence?

Septic Shock is the most severe form of Sepsis which can lead to organ failure and, possibly, death. As a caregiver, hearing the words “Septic Shock” can be very frightening but know this is not a death sentence. The mortality rate is high but swift treatment is essential and can be successful.
