Aniridia is a serious and rare genetic eye disorder that affects the colored part of the eye (iris). Aniridia means lack of an iris. With this condition, the iris is partly or fully gone. The pupil is abnormally large and may be oddly shaped.

Can an eye have no pupil?

How can aniridia affect vision? People with aniridia aren't able to control the amount of light entering their eyes because their iris tissue is missing, their pupils remain large and their eyes do not adjust to differing lighting levels.

What happens if there is no iris?

With aniridia, the iris, or the colored band that surrounds the pupil, is either missing or partially missing. This can lead to impaired vision and extreme discomfort in sunlight when too much light enters the eye.
