Has Omeprazole Been Recalled?

As of this time, there has not been a recall of Nexium or Prilosec related to kidney damage. However, the investigation into these drugs, from a legal standpoint, are still at the early stages.

Is omeprazole still safe to take?

Doctor's response

Omeprazole controls acid production in the stomach only and does not affect the acid/alkaline balance of the body. The drug has been in use for some 10 years and appears to be safe for long term use.

Why has omeprazole been recalled?

The FDA said the medicines may contain "unacceptable" amounts of N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a substance the World Health Organization has classified as a "probable human carcinogen."
