Do heme groups contain nitrogen? The iron in the center of the heme group interacts with six ligands, four nitrogen atoms of the porphyrin ring, the imidazole side chain of the His64 amino acid residue, and one oxygen molecule.

What is heme composed of?

In the blood: hemoglobin. a chemical structure known as a heme group. Heme consists of a ring-shaped organic compound called porphyrin, to which an iron atom is attached. It is the iron atom that reversibly binds to oxygen when blood moves between the lungs and tissues.
