During an intravenous pyelogram, you'll have an X-ray dye (iodine contrast solution) injected into a vein in your arm. The dye flows into your kidneys, ureters and bladder, outlining each of these structures.
How long does a Pyelogram take?
This usually lasts about 30 minutes. You may be asked to change positions while the X-rays are taken. You will be asked to empty your bladder. You may be given a bedpan or urinal.
Are IVP still done?
IVPs are still performed. However, computed tomography (CT) scans are now the preferred way to examine the urinary system. These scans take less time to perform. They are also able to provide alternate views of the system.
