How Are Sea Forts Built?

It may be a fortified island, built on a large part of an island or a tidal island, a construction built on the sea bed, or consist of steel towers erected on the seabed. The builders have sought to command a sea lane or block a potential landing place. Being surrounded by water impedes a land attack.

How did they build sea forts?

Stone blocks were lowered onto the sea bed to act as foundations for the construction. The massive stones were transported from quarries by rail to a preparation area at Stokes Bay where they were trimmed to size, marked up and laid out as they would be in the final construction.

How were the Solent forts constructed?

The birth of the forts

There were to be 5 forts in total with 15ft granite walls and armour plating. All resources had to be transported from the quarry by train and then by barge before being secured in place by divers. It certainly wasn't easy!
