How Did Avila Beach Get Its Name

The name Avila commemorates Miguel Ávila, who was granted Rancho San Miguelito in 1842. The town was established in the latter half of the 19th century, when it served as the main shipping port for San Luis Obispo.

1839. Miguel Avila becomes grantee of Rancho San Miguelito – 136 acres of land bordering the bay of San Luis Obispo. In 1867 his son sold parcels of the land and established the town of Avila, which later became Avila Beach.
