On Saturday morning, sixteen more marathon runners were sent to the hospital, according to the New York Fire Department. Five persons were in critical condition, eight others were suffering from non-life threatening injuries, and four more were suffering from minor injuries.

After race officials indicated that a guy collapsed just after crossing the finish line around 9 a.m., David Reichman passed. He was subsequently pronounced dead at the Coney Island Hospital. A medical evaluation is still underway to determine the cause of death.

It’s unclear whether heat had a part in the man’s death, as per race organizer New York Road Runners. As reported by the New York Times, the NYRR alerted participants ahead of time to be aware of heat problems.

On Saturday, New York had its first May heat advisory in 16 years, with temperatures reaching the upper 80s. According to the Times, temperatures were in the low 60s when the half marathon began at 7 a.m. and had risen to the low 70s by 11 a.m. As per the National Weather Service, the relative humidity in New York hit 97% throughout the race.

With that in mind, the New York Road Runners said in a statement to the New York Post that event organizers prioritized safety and that the man who died received rapid on-site medical assistance after falling.
