How Do Lentils Grow? The dry lentils that you purchase at the grocery store are the seeds of the lentil plant. These seeds grow inside pods (just like green beans or snap peas) on slender, flowering bushes that thrive in the cool season of early spring.
Why lentils are bad for you?
Like other legumes, raw lentils contain a type of protein called lectin that, unlike other proteins, binds to your digestive tract, resulting in a variety of toxic reactions, such as vomiting and diarrhea. Yikes. Luckily, lectins are heat sensitive, and break down into more digestible components when they're cooked!
Where and how do lentils grow?
Lentils grow on sparsely branched vines from 18 to 24 inches tall. The lentil has small whitish to light purple pea-like flowers. Lentils flower from the lower branches and up until harvest. Each flower produces a short pod that contains 1-3 seeds.
