How Do Methyldopa Work

Methyldopa is in a class of medications called antihypertensives. It works by relaxing the blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily through the body. High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body.

Is methyldopa a vasodilator?

Methyldopa and labetalol are classified as sympatholytic drugs, and hydralazine and long-acting nifedipine are classified as vasodilators. Therefore, if two drugs are concomitantly used, drugs with different mechanisms of antihypertensive action should be combined.

Can methyldopa cause low blood pressure?

Anesthetics also lower your blood pressure. If you take methyldopa and receive regular doses of anesthetics, your blood pressure may drop too low.
