The procedure is basically the same as a Time-Sert, drill out hole, tap hole, insert helicoil, thread in new bolt.

Re: removing/replacing helicoil If it was installed properly with Loctite, it may require some heat to break it loose. To install new, chase the threads with the proper tap, clean threads thoroughly and install new insert with Loctite. Let cure overnight before you use.
Are helicoils permanent?
Helicoils are considered a permanent repair. If installed correctly they do not back out or sustain damage easily. Of course if you install a Helicoil and then thread in a cross threaded bolt you will damage the coil, (as you would by threading a cross threaded bolt into just about any material).
