People get shingles when the varicella zoster virus, which causes chickenpox, reactivates in their bodies after they have already had chickenpox. You cannot get shingles from someone who has shingles.
Can you get shingles from someone?
You can't catch shingles, and you can't give shingles to someone else. But you can give others chickenpox. After you have chickenpox, the varicella-zoster virus stays dormant in your body. If this virus reactivates, shingles occurs.
Is shingles contagious by touch or airborne?
The risk of spreading the virus is greatly reduced if the rash is well covered. The disseminated form is more communicable than the localized form and may be spread by the airborne route. NOTE: Herpes Zoster (shingles) is not as contagious as chickenpox.
