How Do You Use Amalgam

When placing dental amalgam, the dentist first drills the tooth to remove the decay and then shapes the tooth cavity for placement of the amalgam filling. Next, under appropriate safety conditions, the dentist mixes the encapsulated powdered alloy with the liquid mercury to form an amalgam putty.

Is amalgam easy to use?

Dental amalgam is prepared easily, and it is relatively inexpensive compared with most other restorative materials used in dental treatment. The longevity of dental amalgam restorations is high (Roulet, 1997). The manipulation of dental amalgam after placement in the prepared tooth cavity is easy.

How long do you mix amalgam for?

The mixing time must be individually adapted to any device. Frequently it is 5 – 10 seconds. The ideal mixing time will result in a silvery, shiny amalgam ball that will completely and cleanly detach from the capsule shell.
