How Does a Tea Bag Diffusion

As the water is added to the teabag it causes the tea leaves to move and triggers diffusion of the leaves. Diffusion is defined as the movement of a substance from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. There are lots of tea molecules in the bag and none outside.

How is making tea an example of diffusion?

When steeping a cup of tea, molecules from the tea cross from the tea bag and diffuse throughout the cup of water. When shaking salt into water, the salt dissolves and the ions move until they are evenly distributed.

How does a tea bag dissolve in water?

As they start to dissolve, the molecules inside the bag begin to move faster and faster. One molecule bumps into another, then into a second and a third, and so on until gradually the molecules spread out, leave the vicinity of the tea bag and turn the water a marvelous golden color.
