How Does Tesla Preconditioning Work?

Battery preconditioning raised the temperature of the battery to do two things. Raising the temperature of the battery helps to gain back lost regen capability due to the cold. Warming the battery also allows for faster charging than would otherwise be attained with a cold battery.

How does Tesla precondition battery?

This week, Tesla started rolling out a new software update for its vehicles that will precondition the battery as it reaches a charger – Tesla-branded or otherwise. That means the vehicle will warm up the battery, enabling it to reach higher charging speeds, when the driver has inputted a charger as a destination.

What does preconditioning do Tesla?

Preconditioning the battery allows it to skip the slow part at the beginning. This means you get full speed for a little bit longer at the beginning, meaning you have saved time, and charged more, before the charging starts to slow down. This saves a significant amount of charging time.
