Tribology is the science of wear, friction and lubrication, and encompasses how interacting surfaces and other tribo-elements behave in relative motion in natural and artificial systems. This includes bearing design and lubrication.
What is the use of tribology?
Applications. Historically, tribology is applied to the most common rolling or sliding components, which are bearings, gears, cams, brakes and seals. These common elements are used in a variety of machines that have relative motion and require some sliding motion and/or rotational motion.
How the concept of tribology came into existence?
The word tribology derives from the Greek root τριβ- of the verb τρίβω, tribo, "I rub" in classic Greek, and the suffix -logy from -λογία, -logia "study of", "knowledge of". Peter Jost coined the word in 1966, in the eponymous report which highlighted the cost of friction, wear and corrosion to the UK economy.
