The flowers are borne in clusters atop long stems. Purpletop verbena is an upright, clump-forming plant with wiry, widely branched stems. It reaches a height of 3 to 6 feet and spreads 1 to 3 feet. Unlike many other tall herbaceous plants it is unlikely to tip over.
How does Verbena spread?
It spreads by long white rhizomes (underground stems) which spread out in all directions and form dense colonies. Because of this growth habit, it forms a very effective groundcover. Rigid Verbena is hardy and drought resistant.
Is tall verbena invasive?
Verbena bonariensis (Tall Verbena) is listed in the Invasive Plant Atlas of the United States.
