How Fast Do Hops Grow

In the springtime, after the rhizomes are planted, the bines (hop vines) of a new hop plant begin to grow. Hop vines are capable of growing up to 12 inches a day under ideal conditions. However, most grow approximately 2 feet per week.

What month do you harvest hops?

Hops are usually ready to pick by late August or early September depending on where you live. Select a random cone and cut it vertically. A ripe cone will have yellow dust (lupulin) in the center and it should be pungently hoppy.

Do hops need a lot of water?

The roots of the plant will not tolerate standing water. This is why a well-drained soil is important. During initial establishment, frequent light waterings are suffi- cient. Once the plants are established hops will require approximately 1.5″ of water equivalent per week.
