How Gulal Is Made?

Some of the more benign, modern Holi colors, called gulal in Hindi when made in powder form, are a mixture of more than 95% cornstarch blended with food-, drug-, and cosmetic-grade dyes. These pigments, known as FD&C colors in the U.S., are the same ones that bring a rainbow of colors to candy.

How do you make gulal powder?

Boil coffee powder (200gm) in water till it turns brown. Once it cools down, mix the brown coloured water with corn flour (1.5kg) with your hands and leave it to dry for a day. Then, sieve it a few times. You can also add a little rosewater (10ml) for fragrance.

How is natural gulal made?

Yellow: You can blend turmeric powder with gram flour in a 1:2 ratio to make dry gulal. Alternatively, any yellow coloured flowers, such as marigold or yellow chrysanthemums, can be crushed and combined in water for wet colours. Green: To obtain a lovely green-coloured gulal, you can use henna or mehendi powder.
