How Is Ecdysone Made?

The steroid ecdysone secreted from the Y-organ stimulates molting. After it is released into the blood, ecdysone is converted to a 20-hydroxyecdysone, which is the active molting hormone. Secretion of ecdysone is blocked by a neurohormone called molt-inhibiting hormone, produced by the eyestalk complex.

How is ecdysone produced?

Ecdysone is synthesized in insect prothoracic glands and crustacean Y-organs, secreted to hemolymph, and oxidized to 20E in peripheral tissues such as the fat body. Ecdysone is synthesized from cholesterol (C27) and other plant steroids (C28) such as stigmasterol, β-sitosterol, and campesterol.

Is ecdysone a PGH?

3- Prothoracic gland hormone (PGH) / Ecdysone

This hormone is the secretion from the prothoracic gland, by the paired bilateral sheet of cells in the thorax, chemical nature of this hormone is ecdysteroid. This hormone plays role in moulting and metamorphosis in insects.
