Sulfonamides, or "sulfa drugs," are a group of medicines used to treat bacterial infections. They may be prescribed to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs), bronchitis, eye infections, bacterial meningitis, pneumonia, ear infections, severe burns, traveler's diarrhea, and other conditions.
How is sulfa drug used today?
Sulfa drugs kill bacteria and fungi by interfering with their metabolism. They were the "wonder drugs" before penicillin and are still used today. Because sulfa drugs concentrate in the urine before being excreted, treating urinary tract infections is one of their most common uses.
Why is sulfonamide important?
Sulfa drugs were amongst the oldest synthesized antimicrobial agents and are still widely used today to treat different microbial infections. Clinical treatment with sulfonamides has regained confidence with the use of a combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim to treat urinary tract bacterial infections.
