How Is Water Treated for Human Use

The water-treatment process involves four steps, in this order: coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. The purpose of coagulation is to create dirt clumps that are heavy enough to sink, which is important for the next step in the process.

How is water treated before we use it?

Coagulation and flocculation are often the first steps in water treatment. Chemicals with a positive charge are added to the water. The positive charge of these chemicals neutralizes the negative charge of dirt and other dissolved particles in the water.

How is water treated to make it safe?

Tertiary treatment is the final stage of wastewater treatment. The goal of this stage is to make water safe enough to drink. In this stage, remaining solids settle and are removed in a final settlement tank. Water is also filtered through sand and disinfected with chlorine.
