It works because when melamine resin cures into foam, its microstructure becomes almost as hard as glass – causing it to act like super-fine sandpaper on stains. The abrasive foam loosens up dirt and grime, and the open microstructure of the foam sucks it in and traps it there.
Are melamine sponges safe?
Is melamine foam toxic? Melamine foam is not toxic to the environment. It does contain something called formaldehyde-melamine-sodium bisulfite copolymer, but this poses no health and safety risks.
What are melamine sponges and why do they clean so well?
The individual strands of the material are extremely small, which allows them to get into nearly microscopic gaps in almost any surface. But they're also very hard and abrasive, which allows them to remove stains and scuffs from the underlying material. Melamine foam up close. Photo via BASF.
