How Often Do Cycads Flower

Sago palms only bloom once every three to four years with either male or female flowers. The flowers are actually more of a cone since sagos aren’t really palms but are cycads, the original cone forming plants.

How often do cycads cone?

In habitat, many cycads produce leaves, at most, once a year and produce cones only sporadically. As houseplants, they may only produce leaves every two years and remain somewhat the same size for many years (one reason they can be excellent as bonsai specimens).

How can you tell if a sago palm is male or female?

The male structure is elongated and looks like a cone (which makes sense now that you know they are related to the cone-bearing conifers). Female sago palms produce a cone that is large, dome-shaped and eventually contains red seeds.
