How Vermilion Is Made?

Dry-process vermilion is prepared by adding Mercury to molten Sulfur, which forms a black isomorph of mercuric sulfide. The black mass is ground, heated to sublimation, then condensed to form vermilion.

Where did Vermillion come from?

Naturally occurring vermilion is an opaque, orangish red pigment and was originally derived from powdered mineral cinnabar, the ore of which contains mercury – making it toxic. In fact in ancient times many of the miners who extracted the ore paid a high price, losing their lives.

How do you make vermillion color?

To create a paint closest in colour to Vermilion, we recommend a mix of Cadmium Red, Cadmium Red Deep and Titanium White. Cadmium Red is the nearest match to Vermilion, so add very small amounts of Cadmium Red Deep and even smaller amounts of Titanium White.
