How Was Lake Winnipesaukee Formed?

Winnipesaukee is a glacial lake but an unusual one, since the last glaciation actually reversed the flow of its waters. Draining the central portion of New Hampshire, it once flowed southeast, leaving via what is now Alton Bay toward the Atlantic Ocean.

When was Lake Winnipesaukee formed?

The landscape as we see it today is primarily as it was prior to the start of the last glacial period of about 50,000 years ago, plus the eskers, drumlins, boulder trains, cirques, kames, varves and other glacial remains.

Who owns Lake Winnipesaukee?

By the 1930s, the New Hampshire state government would take control of the Lakes Region water flow. Today, the state of New Hampshire's Dam Bureau runs the Lake Village dam. And the dam operator still works out of the Lake Company's old offices.
