Like the Great Pyramid, Khafre's pyramid is built on an outcrop of rock into which the subterranean chambers are cut. The bottom course of the cladding was pink granite, but the higher sections are clad in Tura limestone, some of which is still in place. Unfortunately, the pyramidion is missing.
Did Khafre build a pyramid?
Khufu's son, Pharaoh Khafre, built the second pyramid at Giza, circa 2520 B.C. His necropolis also included the Sphinx, a mysterious limestone monument with the body of a lion and a pharaoh's head. The Sphinx may stand sentinel for the pharaoh's entire tomb complex.
How were the pyramids actually built?
Once the stones were dragged across the desert, it's believed that one of a series of ramp options were erected to drag the stones to the top as they built upwards. With sand, workers created either a straight ramp up one side, a spiralling ramp that wrapped around the pyramid or a combination of the two.
