Ian Rapoport was born on January 9, 1980, in Westchester County, New York, United States. He is the son of Fred and Esta M. Rapoport. His father Fred is a doctor in the trenches of Beth Israel Hospital in New York City and his mother is an adjunct professor at Fordham University in New York. He has a brother named Jake Rapoport and a sister named Mimi Rapoport.

Rapoport attended Hackley School in Tarrytown, New York, graduating in 1998. He then went to Columbia University from where he earned a BA in History in 2002.
