The conjunctiva has many fine delicate blood vessels that run through it. Usually these blood vessels are constricted and small, and barely visible. When an eye becomes inflamed, such as in cases of conjunctivitis (“pink eye”), the conjunctival blood vessels are enlarged and dilated, and become much more visible.
Does conjunctiva have blood vessels?
The conjunctiva has many small blood vessels that provide nutrients to the eye and lids. It also contains special cells that secrete a component of the tear film to help prevent dry eye syndrome.
How does blood drain from the eye?
Venous outflow from the eye is primarily via the vortex veins and the central retinal vein, which merge with the superior and inferior ophthalmic veins that drain into the cavernous sinus, the pterygoid venous plexus and the facial vein (Fig 2.2, right).
