In Humidification the Gas Is?

Gas humidification refers to the addition of water vapor to a gas flow to create a specific relative humidity (RH). Relative humidity is the ratio of partial pressure of water vapor (pH2O) in the gas to the equilibrium vapor pressure at saturation at a specific temperature.

What happens during humidification?

Dry and cold inspiratory air is passed from the ventilator to the humidifier chamber. There it floats above the water surface and absorbs heat and humidity in form of water vapor (pass-over-procedure). Since water vapor cannot transport germs, the risk of contamination is considerably reduced.

Why is humidification of inhaled gases important?

Energy is required to heat and humidify dry gases. Humidifying and warming inspired dry gas accounts for ∼15% of the body's total basal heat expenditure. Failure to provide humidified inspired gases can lead to complications and patient harm.
