The bonobo, also historically called the pygmy chimpanzee and, less often, the dwarf or gracile chimpanzee, is an endangered great ape and one of the two species making up the genus Pan; the other being the common chimpanzee.
What does the scientific name Pan mean?
The scientific name for the common chimpanzee is Pan troglodytes, a label created in 1775 by the German naturalist Johann Friedrich Blumenbach. He chose the word troglodyte with deliberation; it comes from a Greek word meaning cave dweller.
Is this a Pan paniscus?
Pan paniscus, the pygmy chimpanzee or bonobo (Fig. 7.12), is similar in adult body weight to the smallest subspecies of chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii), but has a darker face, a more gracile skull, more slender limbs, and longer hands and feet.
