Is a Caul Lucky?

Significance of an en caul birth
As with all things rare and babies, some cultures and traditions believe that en caul births are spiritual or even magic. Being born en caul is seen as a sign of good luck for both baby and parents. Parents and midwives in some cultures even dry and save the caul as a good luck charm.

Why is a caul lucky?

Folklore developed suggesting that possession of a baby's caul would bring its bearer good luck and protect that person from death by drowning. Cauls were therefore highly prized by sailors. Medieval women often sold them to sailors for large sums of money; a caul was regarded as a valuable talisman.

What does it mean if a baby is born with a veil over its face?

This phenomenon happens when the fetus is born with the amniotic sac intact. This allows for the delivery to be easier and causes less bruising for the baby and mother. A veiled birth occurs when a child is born and has a portion of the birth membrane remaining around its head and face.
