Is a Leek a Root Vegetable

Leeks are root vegetables that look quite similar to onions, to which they are related. Their flavor is onion-like but much milder. Unlike onions, leeks don’t form much of a bulb on the end of the root.

What are leeks classified as?

The leek is a vegetable, a cultivar of Allium ampeloprasum, the broadleaf wild leek. The edible part of the plant is a bundle of leaf sheaths that is sometimes erroneously called a stem or stalk. The genus Allium also contains the onion, garlic, shallot, scallion, chive, and Chinese onion.

Are leeks and onions from the same family?

Leeks come from the same family (allium) as onions, but so does garlic and chives.
